چکیده

ÐChordal rings have been proposed in the past as networks that combine the simple routing framework of rings with the lower diameter, wider bisection, and higher resilience of other architectures. Virtually all proposed chordal ring networks are nodesymmetric, i.e., all nodes have the same in/out degree and interconnection pattern. Unfortunately, such regular chordal rings are not scalable. In this paper, periodically regular chordal (PRC) ring networks are proposed as a compromise for combining low node degree with small diameter. By varying the PRC ring parameters, one can obtain architectures with significantly different characteristics (e.g., from linear to logarithmic diameter), while maintaining an elegant framework for computation and communication. In particular, a very simple and efficient routing algorithm works for the entire spectrum of PRC rings thus obtained. This flexibility has important implications for key system attributes such as architectural scalability, software portability, and fault tolerance. Our discussion is centered on unidirectional PRC rings with in/out-degree of 2. We explore the basic structure, topological properties, optimization of parameters, VLSI layout, and scalability of such networks, develop packet and wormhole routing algorithms for them, and briefly compare them to competing fixed-degree architectures such as symmetric chordal rings, meshes, tori, and cube-connected cycles. Index TermsÐChordal rings, fault tolerance, greedy routing, hierarchical parallel architectures, interconnection networks, routing algorithms, skip links.

On isomorphisms and similarities between generalized Petersen networks and periodically regular chordal rings

Generalized Petersen (GP) networks and periodically regular chordal (PRC) rings have been proposed independently to ameliorate the high latency and extreme fragility of simple ring networks. In this paper, we note that certain GP networks are isomorphic to suitably constructed PRC rings, while other varieties correspond to PRC rings that closely approximate their topological and performance att...

Periodically Regular Chordal Rings are Preferable to Double-Ring Networks

The susceptibility of ring networks to disconnection as a result of one or two node/link failures has led to a number of proposals to increase the robustness of such networks. One class of proposals, discussed primarily in the networking and communication communities, but also advocated for use in parallel and distributed systems, involves the provision of a second ring to improve system throug...

Correction to 'Periodically Regular Chordal Rings'

ae THE following are corrections to this paper which appeared in the June 1999 issue. We clarify them here since the errors make statements which may appear invalid or difficult to understand.

Symmetry properties of chordal rings of degree 3

This paper presents the main properties of chordal rings of degree 3. This family of graphs is strongly related to circulant graphs, which are actually often called chordal rings too. The use of triangles in the plane to represent the vertices allows one to associate a plane tessellation to every chordal ring. By using this geometrical approach, we study the recognition and the isomorphism prob...

Performance Implications of Nodal Degree for Optical Burst Switching Mesh Networks Using Signaling Protocols with One-Way Reservation Schemes

This paper investigates the role of nodal degree (meshing degree) in optical burst switching (OBS) mesh networks using signaling protocols with one-way reservation schemes. The analysis is focused on the following topologies: rings, degree-three chordal rings, degree-four chordal rings, degree-five chordal rings, mesh-torus, NSFNET, ARPANET and the European Optical Network. It is shown that whe...
